A Traumatic Brain Injury is a complex injury resulting from either a jolt or a violent blow to the victim’s head or body (such as in an auto accident, a sports mishap, or a physical attack). A traumatic brain injury can also be caused by an object* penetrating the victim’s brain tissue. (*The “object” does not have to be foreign to the body: It can include a shattered piece of skull!)
A mild traumatic brain injury might affect the victim’s brain cells only for a short time. However, a serious traumatic brain injury can result in long-term or permanent complications, including death.
Traumatic brain injuries may cause symptoms to appear immediately following the traumatic event, though sometimes, symptoms do not appear until days or weeks after the trauma.
Signs and symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury may include: Dizziness • Confusion • Headache • Nausea / Vomiting • A Brief Loss of Consciousness • A Dazed or Disoriented State • Fatigue / Drowsiness • Wild Mood Swings • Slurred Speech • Blurred Vision
The signs and symptoms of a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury may include: Dilation of One or Both Pupils • A Loss of Consciousness that Can Last Several Hours or More • A Severe Headache that Only Worsens with Time • Loss of Balance • Persistent Nausea and/or Vomiting • Convulsions / Seizures • Clear Liquid Draining from the Nose and/or Ears • Numbness in Extremities • Profound Confusion • Combativeness • Slurred Speech • Minimally Conscious State • Inability to Awaken • Coma • Vegetative State • Brain Death
II Corinthians 12:9 - "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
